On this unforgettable day trip, you will come face to face with a herd of working elephants in one of Phuket's most successful ecological projects. The Phuket Elephant Sanctuary has developed from a retirement home for elderly pachyderms into being one of the most popular tourist attractions on the island.

At the sanctuary, you will get a chance to see the elephants at work knocking down trees and dragging logs around, as they would have done in the logging industry. There is also the chance to go on a short elephant trek into the jungle, where you can enjoy superb views over the countryside from your vantage point high above the ground.

Back at the camp, the elephant band will perform some unusual music for the crowd, and there is a chance to browse through a gallery and even buy paintings made by these talented creatures. Perhaps the biggest highlight of the day comes next, as the parade of elephants makes its way down to the waterside for a muddy wallow and a messy shower.

With plenty of opportunities for photographs and lots of activities on offer it should come as no surprise that this excursion is so popular, and anyone wanting to undertake it should make sure that they book in advance of travel.
